Wednesday 13th October

We’d been out in Hell’s Mouth on Brett’s Seacat on Tuesday, looking for lost fishing rods and anchors, mostly unsuccessfully, so when I phoned in to Dewi a bit late that evening and learnt that only Keiran had phoned in for a night dive at Porth Ysgaden I took a raincheck, not least because I didn’t think it would be that clear as the breeze all day had been from the north west.

However, at 4.30pm on Wednesday evening, as I was walking the dogs around Carreg y Defaid, I saw that the sea was flat calm and the viz. excellent.  As I walked home I convinced myself that this was too good to pass on so at ten to five I phoned Keiran to see if he was still up for a dive.  He was so we met up at Gimblet Rock at a quarter to six and were in the water just after six for a dusk dive.  I had had time to phone the usual suspects but unsurprisingly all were otherwise busy or not contactable.  (I guess that this is where your What’s App messaging might have helped!!).  Carol and the dogs did shore cover for us while we had what is best described as a very enjoyable bimble in viz. of about 6 metres, seeing most of the usual small sqidgy stuff and several nice sized assorted flatfish in a balmy sea at 16 degrees.  As it was mid tide and falling we were wary of current and found ourselves crabbing out as the tide swung our legs to the side but, probably because it was a neap tide, it wasn’t really a problem.  We were out of the water and away shortly after 7pm.

Four of us did get out on the Club rib on Friday, when Dewi took the initiative to organize, for what for me was arguably one of the best dives of the season on one of the north coast reefs at slack water but I will leave it to Dewi to report further.  It just shows what is possible late in the season if there is a bit of half decent weather.
