Sunday 28th January Vivian Quarry

Dive leader training. The quarry definitely felt colder as Wyn and I decended the shot-line to the platform (It was actually 7deg C). Wyn was doing his dive leader demonstration with Hugh acting the role of a trainee ocean diver with 4 open water dives done. David, Mick and Robin gave the controlled buoyant lift some more practice. Irfon and Lee came along for a non-training dive.

Changes to Diver Training Programme.

An update to the Diver Training Programme (DTP2007) was announced at the Dive Officer’s Conference DOC in December 2006. The DTP2007 integrates the use of Nitrox 32 and Nitrox 36 into the Ocean and Sports Diver grades and incorporates a number of global changes that are detailed below. The DTP2007 is supported by the instructor resources CD-ROM that includes Instructor Notes, Classroom Visual Aids and Theory Assessment documentation. Student Workbooks and Instructor Prompt Cards support the delivery of the syllabus and are available from the BSAC shop.

Global Changes:
“Dive Marshal” becomes “Dive Manager”
“Safe diving practice” becomes “safe diving”
“Air” (in all references) becomes “diving gas” or just “gas”
“Alternate Air Source (AAS)” becomes “Alternative Supply (AS)”
“School” (as in BSAC School) becomes “centre”
“Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)” becomes “Basic Life Support (BLS)”
“Tri-mix” becomes “mixed gas”
“Dive Marshalling” becomes “Dive Management”
“Rule of Thirds” is made consistent as a recommendation from Ocean Diver.

Sunday 21st January 2007 Vivian Quarry

Did you see that lobster and the size of the conger, well… And what did you think of the blond? Another debrief of the Instructor demonstration of dive leading a trainee Ocean Diver. No the blond was not a figment of narcosis nor the wishful thinking of one of the club’s respected instructors. There is now a blond female shop window mannequin, clad only in her lingerie complete with suspender belt, strategically placed beneath the divers’ entry point. There was just a small tremor to their torch beams as Wyn & Hugh went past on DO2. David and Irfon doing the DO3 lesson with Irfon showing his leading qualities, made no comment about the maiden. For a change there was no rain but there was snow visible on the tops of the surrounding peaks so we all changed outside for old times sake.

The Club got the Community First grant for the scuba gear (£1665.50: cylinders, BDCs, regulators, fins etc) but not for the dry-suits for this financial year. Irfon our Equipment Officer will now buy the gear. The Club will put in a new application, for dry-suits, ready for the beginning of the next financial year which starts in April.

Sunday 7th January 2007 Vivian Quarry.

Hugh & Dewi doing the DO1 the mid water deployment of the DSMB, David & Irfon doing DO2 Instructor demonstration of Dive Leading a trainee Ocean Diver and Robin & Mick practicing CBLs and AAS ascents with panache. What busy little divers we were and all in the pouring rain; another example where it seemed drier underwater. Thank goodness for the changing room.

Congratulations to Simon and Carl for passing their Ocean Diver theory assessment with room to spare. All Ocean divers have now passed this assessment. Thanks to the Training Officer (David) for giving of his time to get the assessments completed.
